Gender Studies and Politics Major
Archival Processes
Over the summer, I did an internship at the Lesbian Herstory Archives in Brooklyn, New York. My responsibilities at the archives were to organize and categorize the large banner collection consisting of materials gathered from political protests and/or marches from the mid-to-late-twentieth century. As a gender studies major, organizing banners from political marches concerning LGTBQ politics was an interesting project. To organize the materials, I created a new catalogue sheet and did an inventory of the collection. After taking the inventory, I then reentered all data into the software for the archive. I also conducted research about the best ways to store banners through contacting professionals within the field. This experience helped me to develop professional interpersonal skills, detail-oriented organizational skills and to be independently motivated. It has made me more confident moving toward post-grad opportunities and employment possibilities.
