Protecting the Invisible: Local Non-Profit Advocacy
Media coverage of Central American asylum seekers has extensively focused on their presence at the U.S./Mexico border, but what about those already in our local communities? As an intern at Central American Legal Assistance this past summer, I was introduced to the journey of asylum seekers from their arrival to the U.S. until their final court hearings. I was able to work with attorneys in their fight to protect Central American communities in New York City as they sought asylum, temporary protected status, DACA, as well as work permits. I was able to prepare documents for their cases, translate at interviews, as well as observe their final hearings. My experience at CALA centered on the immigrant community in NYC that too often is ignored, and reminded me that local activism can have a global impact.
