What They Don't Teach in Journalism Class
Last summer, I worked as an news reporting intern at the Daily Hampshire Gazette, a regional paper based in Northampton, Massachusetts. Going into the internship, I wanted to learn about the journalism industry and improve my writing and reporting skills. Over the course of my summer I covered everything from local politics to Scrabble tournaments and learned to apply rigorous reporting to each. I also got the opportunity to try my hand at longform pieces in the paper’s weekly magazine. Working at the Gazette, I grappled with issues that I had not considered before the start of my internship, such as journalism ethics and the role of social media. I hope to continue as a journalist but I know that the writing, critical thinking and communication skills I developed will help me in any field I enter.
